چکیده

The data on dynamic masses and multicolor photometry of 56 M-type components of binary/multiple systems was collected. Critical evaluation of late type stars bolometric correction scales have been performed. Our refined and reduced data is comparedwith published empirical and theoreticalmassluminosity relations. Our data does not exclude the existence of a step-like feature at MV = 12m. The best agreement between observations and theoretical models is found for recent calculations of D’Antona & Mazzitelli (1994) with Alexander opacities. We conclude that present-day knowledge of themassluminosity relation at faintest magnitudes is not sufficient for making definite conclusions on the initial mass function of low mass stars.

LINEAR PULSATION CHARACTERISTICS OF MIRA VARIABLE STARS

The linear adiabatic pulsation-periods of Mira variable stars have been derived. Approximately 2701[1]models were calculated for M = 0.7 MΘ to 2 MΘ stars with radii from 180 RΘ to 340 RΘ and luminosities from 2800 LΘ to 10,000 LΘ. The chemical composition of all models is (X,Z) = (0.7,0.02). From the result of this study, linear relations on Luminosity-Period-Mass relationship and luminosity-pe...

The abundance of brown dwarfs

The amount of mass contained in low-mass objects is investigated anew. Instead of using a mass–luminosity relation to convert a luminosity function to a mass function, I predict the mass-luminosity relation from assumed mass functions and the luminosity functions of Jahreiss &Wielen (1997) and Gould, Bahcall & Flynn (1997). Comparison of the resulting mass–luminosity relations with data for bin...

The conversion from Luminosity Functions to Mass Functions

The aim of this talk is to review the methodology required to translate the observed luminosity function of a stellar sample into the mass function of the stars constituting the sample. Emphasis is given to the stellar models which necessarily underlie this operation, as the mass function is proportional to the derivative of the mass{luminosity relation, and this latter quantity can not be deri...

Unification of the Nearby and Photometric Stellar Luminosity Functions

We introduce a model Galactic field low-mass stellar population that has a proportion of binary systems as observed, with a mass ratio distribution consistent with observational constraints. The model single star and system luminosity function agrees with the nearby and the Malmquist corrected photometric luminosity function, respectively. We tabulate the model luminosity functions in the photo...

Accurate masses of very low mass stars IV . Improved mass - luminosity relations ?

We present improved visual and near-infrared empirical mass-luminosity relations for very low mass stars (M<0.6 M). These relations make use of all stellar masses in this range known with better than 10% accuracy, most of which are new determinations with 0.2 to 5% accuracy from our own programme, presented in a companion paper. As predicted by stellar structure models, the metallicity dispersi...

Accurate masses of very low mass stars : II The very low mass triple system Gl 866 ⋆

ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS Accurate masses of very low mass stars: II The very low mass triple system Gl 866 Abstract. We present very accurate orbital parameters and mass measurements (2.4% accuracy) for the well known very low mass triple system Gl 866. We obtain first orbital elements for the short-period orbit and greatly improve the long period orbit. All three stars have masses close to 0...
